The traditional cuisine is a very special experience for the senses, because the history and culture are reflected in the dishes. Mostly bread, milk and meat form the basis, which livestock farming long played an important role in Kyrgyzstan.
The culture of Kyrgyzstan is characterized by its diversity of different ethnic groups. The country is predominantly Muslim, but there are also many followers of Christianity and Russian Orthodox in Kyrgyzstan. Horse breeding and traditional yurts occupy a central place in Kyrgyz culture.
Kyrgyzstan developed into a multi-ethnic state during its Soviet era, and thus at the end of the USSR about 80 nationalities settled in the country, bringing with them an enormous cultural diversity. With about 65 % of the population, the Kyrgyz make up the largest share. The nomadic roots of the Kyrgyz are about 3000 years old and vital in the harsh mountain environment.
The country is very characterized by its mountains, because and 94 % of the area are located at an altitude of over 1000 meters. Here you will find the Issyk-Kul, the second largest lake in the world and the endless expanses and huge mountain peaks of the popular Tian Shan Mountains, which even UNESCO has designated a World Heritage Site.
