Montenegro

Montenegro is one of the smallest countries in Europe and offers many natural beauties such as rugged mountains, breathtaking beaches, deep gorges, ancient cities, virgin forests and pristine glacial lakes.

Why travel to Montenegro?

Montenegro is a state in the southeastern part of Europe and is located on the Balkan Peninsula. It is also one of the smallest countries in Europe, with a population of less than one million people. The name Montenegro comes from the dark mountain forests that cover the land and mountains all over the country. Originally, the locals called the country "Crna Gora" or Land of Black Hills, which later became the Italian name Montenegro. The mixture of discovering the rich history and hiking through the untouched nature will immediately captivate you.

Food

Montenegro is a very diverse country, which is also reflected in its cuisine. In the coastal regions, mainly Mediterranean cuisine is common, while in the mountainous regions, people tend to rely on rustic dishes. Thus, the menu can vary greatly in the different regions due to the natural resources. The cuisine has been influenced by various peoples such as the Austrians, Italians, Turks, Serbs and Hungarians. The former Soviet Union also had a great influence on culinary habits. Traditional dishes are for example Kacamak, Meso Ispod Saca or Popeci.

Culture

Montenegro's culture is as diverse as its history and geographical location would suggest. Influences can be found mainly from ancient Rome, Christianity, Islam, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Venice, Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia.

People

The soul of Montenegro can be found not only in its material heritage, such as monuments and natural resources, but also in the hospitality, generosity and warmth of its people. As one of the Balkan countries influenced by different empires, in Montenegro you can see a mixture of different nationalities, cultures and religions. Montenegrins, Serbs, Croats, Orthodox or Roman Catholic Albanians or Muslims often live together harmoniously in a small area and can understand each other. Because of the former Yugoslavia, the different people speak almost the same language, with different dialects in the countries and regions.

Nature

Nature in Montenegro is incredibly diverse and you can easily go from breathtaking beaches to dense jungles among high mountains within a few hours. The south of Montenegro has a 300 km long Adriatic coastline that exudes a magical charm. In the north you can find the majestic towering mountains Durmitor, Prokletije, Bjelasica, Komovi and Piva with their deep river gorges that make Montenegro one of the most untouched places in Europe.
