10 questions to our guide Tinashe from Namibia

Table of Contents

Namibia, a country in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast, is a unique place on this earth. The country invites you on a journey from the Atlantic Ocean at Swakopmund to the desert and national parks in the north and south of the country. There is a great variety of breathtaking places just waiting to be discovered by you. We invite you to join us on our journey through this magical country! Our guide Tinashe and his colleagues are looking forward to explore the country together with you.

Hello Tinashe, you are our partner and guide for Namibia. Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Tinashe, I am an ethical, creative, ambitious, hardworking and friendly young man who has a lot of passion for the travel industry. I have been a tour guide for almost 7 years now and it has been a fantastic time so far.

What three words would you choose to describe Namibia and what do they mean to you?

Exquisite - Namibia is an extremely beautiful and delicate country with so many contrasts that the word that comes closest is exquisite.

Peaceful - although it is certainly a relative term, Namibia is a country where there is no unrest that threatens the travel industry. One can explore the country even in remote areas without fear of being caught in the middle of unrest.

Friendly - We Namibians are a happy people, very hospitable and always willing to go an extra mile to make sure our guests have a memorable time.

What is your favorite season in Namibia and why?

The dry winter months are my favorite time of year because that's when the animals congregate by the hundreds and thousands at the watering holes to quench their thirst, so it's very relaxing for wildlife watchers.
However, the hot, humid summer is also associated with a beauty all its own. The lush greenery and beautiful flowers, make it even more picturesque if you have an eye for a good photo.

What is your favorite local food?

My favorite food is corn porridge (corn ground into powder to make a solid porridge to go with stew, milk or vegetables).

Which part of the country should you visit on a first trip to Namibia?

I would recommend not to miss the most visited part of the landscape in Namibia, the area that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013: The Namib Desert with its huge sand dunes, so beautiful and high that they can caress you. However, it is important to mention that Namibia also has another side, such as breathtaking landscapes with birds, big game and aquatic animals, as well as various contrasting landscape views.

What manners and behavior should I display in Namibia to avoid being rude?

Since Namibia is a country with different cultural backgrounds, cultural norms vary, but one thing unites us all: the love of humanity. Kindness is enough to steal the hearts of everyone in the world. As for rudeness, all I can think of is that it can be considered rude to take photos of locals without their consent.

What's your best advice when it comes to sustainable travel measures?

Namibia is an arid country where every drop of water counts, so water should be used sparingly. We are also a country that restricts plastic. I would advise travelers to use water bottles that can be refilled and reused, preferably not plastic.

What do you love most about traveling?

To get a new perspective. "The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes," Marcel Proust. I couldn't agree more, because that describes the feeling I get when I travel, in this case mostly in nature, which feels like home to me, and that is the best feeling ever.

What was the biggest emergency you experienced? How did you cope with it?

I have been fortunate not to have any life-threatening emergencies during my tours, but something that comes to mind was an accident involving self-drive tourists in Etosha National Park. I was the first on the scene and found a vehicle that had overturned. Of the four occupants, one had broken his arm, so I administered first aid, immobilized the injured person, and cooled the arm with ice to limit the swelling. I took all four to the clinic at the park, because there was no telephone reception at the scene of the accident to call for help. Fortunately, everything turned out well and nothing worse happened.
