6 sustainable projects in Indonesia

Table of Contents

As an emerging country and popular tourist destination, Indonesia is confronted with environmental problems and the consequences of mass tourism. Therefore, we present you 6 sustainable projects in Indonesia, which take care of these problems.

Lack of waste management, increasing carbon dioxide emissions from Indonesia's dense traffic, along with lack of education on environmentally harmful practices, are among the problems to be addressed by the following sustainable projects.

Frying oil becomes biodiesel

A project that solves two of Indonesia's problems at the same time and provides for better health and environmental protection. Used cooking oil is a sought-after commodity in Bali. The extent of this can be seen in the black market for used oil, which is resold to local cookshops after superficial cleaning and poses some health risks. Since there is no alternative disposal system, waste oil in canisters is added to plastic waste or disposed of in sewage.

The following project provides an innovative solution to the disposal problem: A local collection system has been established in Bali to save used cooking oil from the tourism sector from disposal. A plant developed for this purpose then converts this used oil into biodiesel. In addition to this organized disposal, jobs have also been created for the local population and CO₂ emissions reduced.

Biogas through animal manure

This sustainable project aims to install biogas plants.

It encourages families with livestock to produce their own biogas, enabling independence from expensive firewood and fossil fuels. The biogas produced from animal dung can then be used for cooking and lighting.

The digestate from the biogas plants is also a good biological fertilizer that helps improve crop yields for smallholder farmers. The use of the biogas plants reduces greenhouse gas emissions in three places:

  1. Methane, which is produced during the fermentation of manure, is no longer released into the air.
  2. This methane replaces the burning of firewood as a fuel.
  3. The resulting bio-fertilizer replaces chemical agents, as well as their production and transport. Also, this fertilizer is harmless to the soil and has even three times higher nutrient content than normal animal manure.

Urban Compost Bali

Composting has never been so easy!

The sustainable start-up, from a group of local biologists, is committed to environmental protection through proper composting. To participate, all you have to do is sign up and you'll receive a

Compost bin/bag. When the bin is full, it is picked up and replaced with a clean one. And even better, you get biomass in return for the compost, which you can use for your own use. The start-up is also committed to other sustainable projects, protecting biodiversity, the health of the population and the environment of Bali.

Palm oil is also sustainable

As the world's leading exporter of palm oil, Indonesia's environment is feeling the negative effects of palm oil production. In order to remedy this situation, the United Nations, together with other stakeholders, is committed to making this industry environmentally friendly and socially responsible. This has resulted in the "Action Plan for Sustainable Palm Oil", which was passed as a law by the Indonesian President.

To make palm oil supply chains more sustainable, sustainable production, forest conservation, and social inclusion are being promoted in six provinces, benefiting smallholders as well.

Beach Cleanups

Plastic waste in the environment reduces the biodiversity of the oceans, which also affects us land dwellers. The tourism industry also suffers from the immense plastic masses that accumulate on beaches.

Companies have made this problem their core business and make a living from collecting the plastic waste that washes ashore. Companies thus create jobs for the local population and clean up the beaches all over Indonesia. Beach cleanups are now the talk of the town and responsible tourists are even voluntarily including them in their vacation programs.

To get to the root of the problem, Indonesia now has some regulations in place to stop plastic pollution. These include banning single-use plastic in some regions, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, and marine conservation laws. Cleanup and awareness initiatives are also being promoted by many companies.

Chilibeli

Behind this name is an app that serves as a platform for the sale and purchase of fresh fruit and vegetables at fair prices. In this way, the company bridges the gap between farmers, producers and consumers in Indonesia.

Small businesses increase the market they serve through the app, while consumers can meet their daily needs for fresh produce. In addition to this online concept, Chilibeli also enables offline shopping. This offline business is covered by Chilibeli partners in the community, who sell their goods in the neighborhood.

Many farms throughout Indonesia are thus provided with an additional source of income, which enables a sustainable livelihood for many families.
