By our co-founder Alex Ditzel from Zakynthos, Greece:
Where did the idea come from?
In January 2021, I decided to work remotely from Greece. While enjoying the sun and the sea on the beautiful island of Zakynthos, I see a lot of washed up plastic waste on the beaches. The beaches of this island are the breeding ground for thousands of Caretta Caretta turtles that lay their eggs in the sand every year.
Plastic, plastic and more plastic
Let's get started with the Beach Cleanup! So last weekend we packed garbage bags and cleaned a beach from plastic.
During our Beach Cleanup we collected over 200 plastic bottles, over 1,000 plastic bottle caps, plastic straws, plastic oil canisters, plastic cups and much more microplastic. The result: 9 huge (120 liter) bags full of trash.
Beach Cleanup: Why is it important?
Did you know that the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters the ocean every minute? Plastic is a real problem. Not somewhere far away. Here - where we like to vacation.
And if that wasn't enough, the toxic components of the plastic end up in the fish and seafood we eat.
Sustainable tourism
At TripLegend we believe that tourism is intrinsically linked to doing good for people, the environment and wildlife. That's why we have plastic- and waste-avoiding guidelines on all our trips.
But that's not enough for us: all our trips are also certified 100 % CO2 neutral and for every guest we plant a tree for the reforestation of the chimpanzee habitat in Uganda! Learn more here.
How can I help?
Try to avoid plastic wherever possible! Nature will thank us and a plastic-free beach looks perfect in every holiday photo! If you want to help, you can sign a petition like this against single-use plastic.
