Your favorite Asian cuisine in Bhutan. Read on now to discover the culinary delights of Bhutan.
The staple food of Bhutanese cuisine, as in many Asian countries, is rice. Almost all dishes are served with rice. There is the red rice and the white rice. The red rice has a slightly nutty flavor. Quite apart from that, the cuisine of Bhutan is rather vegetarian. In Bhutan, only little meat or fish is eaten, but a lot of vegetables in any variation.
Most dishes consist of a portion of rice, 2-3 vegetable dishes and various sauces.
Those who like spicy food will quickly get their money's worth here. Chili, which in Bhutan is counted among the vegetables and not among the spices, is also classic for the local cuisine. It must not be missing in any authentic Bhutanese dish and is therefore an integral part of many dishes. By the way, chili is called "Hema" in Bhutan.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not known in Bhutan. In most regions of Bhutan, the three meals are the same. Sometimes only rice and some vegetables are served and lunch is ready.
Gondomaru - The breakfast in Bhutan
Gondomaru is a scrambled egg cooked in butter. For this, large amounts of butter are used for frying. Then the traditional Datshi cheese is added and the result is the delicious Bhutanese breakfast. If rice and vegetables are added, there is no need to worry about lunch!
Ema datshi - The most famous dish from the Bhutanese cuisine.
The food is considered the national dish of Bhutan. Translated, "Ema" means chili and "Datshi" cheese in the national language of Bhutan. Here, red or green chili peppers are steamed in a cheese sauce and of course served with rice. For the people who do not like spiciness, this dish is also available in different spiciness variants.
Kule / Kepthang - Your sharpness balance
To balance the spiciness of the national dish, a kule, or kepthang, is usually served. This is a type of flatbread made from buckwheat.
Eze - The spicy salad
Eze is a salad prepared with hot peppers, mostly tomatoes, onions and soft cheese. Again, only the rice is missing and two meals of the day are already covered.
Momos - filled dumplings
Momos are filled dumplings, which are prepared quite traditionally. In most cases, the dumplings are filled with vegetables, rather rarely with minced meat, or quite classically with cheese.
Kewa Datshi - Your change from rice
Kewa Datshi is a change from rice. In this dish, potatoes are tossed together with cheese, chili and tomatoes.
Drinks in Bhutan - the Bhutanese liquid intake
With every meal, something to drink should definitely not be missing. In Bhutan, arak, a rice liquor, is very popular. If you like beer, you will find Indian beer in the larger towns. Bhutan is also a country of whiskey, rum and gin production. An absolute recommendation is Zumzin. The sweet peach wine will immerse you in the sweet diversity of Bhutan. Should you not prefer alcohol, tea is offered in most areas of Bhutan. Seudja, a butter tea with salt, is often drunk with traditional dishes. For those who do not like salty butter tea, a black tea called "Pika" or a tea called "Nadja" is recommended. This is prepared in an Indian way and drunk with milk and sugar.
Typical snacks as we know them do not exist in Bhutan. Nevertheless, 3, one of which is a traditional snack, have become established.
Momo Dumplings - the Bhutanese dumplings
A popular snack is a steamed dumpling. This is usually filled with tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger and chili.
If you like it a little sweeter, you should reach for this snack.
Khabzey - The sweet
Khabzey can be thought of as dried doughnuts, made of flour, water and sugar, which are then deep-fried. An absolute treat for the palate!
Traditionally, the 3rd snack must not be missing in any case.
The betel nut, also called Doma.
After the meal, a piece of the nut is chewed and is considered an emblem of conviviality and is said to aid digestion.
