Best time to visit Nepal: When to travel to Nepal?

Table of Contents

Nepal's travel season is determined by the climate of the Himalayas. The democratic federal republic is located on the southern edge of the mountains and is actually the second highest country on our planet. On the world map, the country can be seen as a narrow strip of land nestled between China in the north and India in the west, south and east. It is an incredibly popular destination due to its vast scenic beauty, wide range of flora and fauna, hospitable Nepali people and diversity of cultures, peoples and religions.

However, this diversity is not only reflected in this, but also in the different climate that prevails in here. Due to the enormous differences in altitude, Nepal belongs to different climate zones. So when planning a trip to the country, depending on what you have in mind, you should always consider the best time to travel.

Weather And Climate In Nepal: The Best Time To Travel

Nepal climate

The seasons are comparable to those in Europe, especially from April to June it gets very hot, while the months from December to February are rather characterized by low temperatures. The remaining months are mild.

As a land of extremes, it is characterized by a dry winter and a hot and humid summer due to the monsoon.

Generally speaking, the best time to travel to Nepal is from October to the end of May. In this time is dry season and there are moderate temperatures.

Lowland climate

The Nepalese lowlands have a subtropical climate. Here, for example, is the Chitwan National Park. Summer in this region is hot and humid, and the thermometer can sometimes reach 40 degrees Celsius during the day. Especially in April and May, before the monsoon starts, it gets oppressively hot. On the other hand, winters in the lowlands are mild and dry, with a minimum temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius at night and about 20 degrees during the day.

Pre-Himalayan climate

Temperate climate prevails in the hilly landscapes of the pre-Himalayas. Pokhara, the Poon Hill Trek or even the Kathmandu Valley are located in this area. Here, warm summers alternate with cool winters, with average temperatures ranging from about 10 degrees in January to 28 degrees in July. In winter, temperatures can drop sharply, but usually remain above 0 degrees Celsius.

High mountain climate

The Himalayan mountains above 4000 meters on the northern border of the country have a high mountain climate. In winter, temperatures here remain constantly below freezing, so that the landscape is completely covered with snow and ice. In spring and autumn, temperatures here tend to be mild and there is little rain or snowfall.

The monsoon

The entire climate in Nepal is influenced by the southwest monsoon. From June to September inclusive, the monsoon marks this period as the rainy season. At the beginning of June, the monsoon starts in the east and eventually moves further west. Especially in the lowland areas, a lot of rain falls daily at this time, mostly in short but heavy downpours. In the mountains, however, the monsoon is not very noticeable. However, trekking is not recommended during this period due to landslides.

The best time period for hiking, cultural or safari trips

Do you want to go on a hiking, cultural or safari trip? Then the best time for this is in the months of December to February. During this time you can enjoy sunny days and mild temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius in the interior up to moderate altitudes, but it can also get cooler at night.

The best months for trekking trips

If you want to go trekking, the months between mid-February and mid-May and between late September and early December are perfect. In this period you can expect less snowfall and rain and pleasant temperatures provide ideal conditions for extensive hikes with clear views of the mountain peaks.

In general, however, as in any other high mountain range, no accurate weather forecast can be made for the Himalayas.
