Montenegro is one of the smallest countries in Europe and belongs to the Balkan states. The unique mixture of idyllic sandy beaches, dark forests, majestic mountains and historic towns makes the country a popular travel destination for tourists. Shaped by the influences of numerous empires, it has a very diverse culture, and some regions even count as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In principle, Montenegro can be visited all year round, with the months from May to early October being the most popular. The main season is July and August, when the European summer vacations take place. However, the best time to visit Montenegro depends on several factors. Whether your trip should be to the interior of the country or to the coast and what activities you have planned can make a small difference here. Below you can find out when is the best time to travel to Montenegro.
Climate and weather
The climate in Montenegro differs depending on the region. On the coast there is a Mediterranean climate and in the summer months it is dry, hot and mostly sunny here, while the winters are rather mild and free of snow. Temperatures reach around 30°C in the warm months and rarely drop below freezing in winter. The sea has a pleasant bathing temperature until autumn.
The inland is separated from the coastal region by the Dinaric Mountains and has a predominantly continental climate due to the altitude. Here, too, the summers are usually very warm, but in winter snowfalls are common and it can get comparatively very cold. The weather can change quickly, especially in the mountainous regions, and humid winds from the coast turn into precipitation here.
Best Travel time for the coast
Due to its location in the south of the Adriatic Sea, the coastal region is a popular destination for beach vacations. The Mediterranean climate ensures hot summers and plenty of sunshine in the summer months from about May to September. During this time, temperatures oscillate between 25°C and 30°C and the water temperatures of 23°C to 27° are also perfect for cooling off in the sea. In the winter months from October to April, the weather on the coast is rather cool and mild, but this period is also becoming increasingly popular with tourists.
Best time to travel inland
The interior of Montenegro is separated from the coastal region by mountains, which is why it has a temperate continental climate. This makes for dry, hot summers and cold, snowy winters. For active vacations or city trips, spring and autumn are best suited, as at this time the temperatures are very pleasant. Depending on the planned activity, however, different travel times are suitable, which we list below.
