Even if it's hard to imagine at the moment, we all hope that we'll be able to take short city trips again from spring 2021. But which cities are particularly suitable to visit in winter. We've put together our top 5 cities to visit in winter.

A city break in winter has its advantages: The high season is over, you don't have to fight your way through the crowds of tourists and the cities show their particularly romantic side. Glittering snowflakes, frozen rivers and the smell of mulled wine make them just that little bit more beautiful.

Zurich 

Especially when it has snowed and the surrounding lakes are partially frozen, Zurich turns into a beautiful winter city. Wrapped up warm, you can take a romantic walk and admire the beautiful Zurich architecture in the old town.

If you don't feel like walking, you can simply take a ride on the historic Märlitram. To warm up, you can eat a typical Swiss cheese fondue in a cosy restaurant. And if you're still not full after the cheese fondue, you can make a detour to the impressive Lindt Museum.

Paris

Probably no other city is as romantic in winter as the city of love and lights: Paris. Once everything is covered with a thick layer of snow that muffles the noise of the big city, you can stroll in peace through the snowy streets of the old town of Paris or the beautiful Sacre Coeur district. If that's too boring, you can also go ice skating in front of the Hôtel de Ville or bargain hunting during the six-week January sales!

Reykjavik

The Icelandic capital enchants in winter with its sea of lights in front of snow-covered landscapes and, of course, with its hot springs, which invite you to enjoy pleasant wellness hours in the midst of landscapes. If you're lucky, you can also marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of the Northern Lights. If you like traditional Icelandic cuisine with plokkfiskur (simple fish dish), herring sandwiches or fermented shark, you should definitely pay a visit to Café Loki just opposite Hallgrimskirkja.

Cities in winter: Copenhagen

Even if your hands are still freezing, a hot dog at one of Copenhagen's many sausage stands is a must. Afterwards you can warm up your icy fingers with a hot cup of glögg. It's also worth taking a walk through Tivoli Park. The park is magnificently decorated, especially during Advent. And if you come to Copenhagen in February, you should definitely visit the winter festival Wondercool!

Riga 

Riga is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in winter. The frozen Daugava River enchants the Baltic city with ice crystals, locals muffle up in warm fur coats and tourists enjoy Riga's extraordinary winter flair. Cosy cafés and restaurants in the old town invite you to warm up after a city tour of Riga. In the cold season, the hearty Latvian specialities taste even better. The Latvian National Opera puts on some great performances during Advent. Culture lovers can dream of winter at ballet performances, such as the Nutcracker.
