Table of Contents

The country on the Adriatic coast has some delicious dishes to offer. Find out what tastes best in Montenegro and what meals Montenegrins eat at home here. Take a trip to the delightful world of food in the Balkans!

Jardum: Brew from sheep's milk

Let's start with a drink, because the inhabitants of the country also attach great importance to the choice of the right drink. Of course, in almost every restaurant you can find the drinks that are common in the rest of Europe, but if you want to drink something that is really typical for the region, the choice falls on Jardum. This tasty drink consists of only two ingredients: Sheep milk* and salt. To do this, the sheep's milk is heated slowly until it foams and becomes a little thick, then it is drunk cooled.

Kacamak

Before the main course, Montenegrins like to serve a small appetizer, which stimulates the appetite, but at the same time does not make you too full. Kacamak is a popular choice: A delicious variation of corn porridge, which is refined with cheese and chopped potatoes. As with all appetizers, of course, do not eat too much, because the Montenegrin main courses have it all!

The national dish: Ćevapčići

Also internationally known far and wide: Ćevapčići. But Montenegrins go one step further and declare the minced meat rolls as their national dish. Throughout the country, the grilled skewers, traditionally made from lamb, are a favorite. Thus, they are also a delicacy in almost every restaurant.

Ćevapčići: The national dish of Montenegro

Montenegrin vegetable stew

Montenegrins usually cook a lot of this hearty lunch. Tomatoes, minced meat and onions are the basic ingredients, along with eggplant, zucchini and peppers. Unlike the name suggests, however, the dish is an oven-baked casserole. Served fresh, the meal warms the stomachs of hungry guests even in the mountains of Montenegro.

Black risotto

On the Adriatic coast live so some squid. Montenegrins take advantage of these - not only themselves, but also the Ink* is used for cooking. This creates the black risotto typical of the coastal regions. Along with the rice, the squids are then served and give a unique dish that you should not miss during your visit to the Balkan country.

Ajvar: Traditional spread

Even if the bread selection in the southern country is not particularly large, there are still some interesting spreads that make eating bread a very special experience: Here the European palate can still experience something new! Ajvar consists mainly of red peppers, which give it the rich color. In addition, there are eggplants and garlic for refinement. Besides the use on bread, the paste can also be used for seasoning.

Buzura

Buzara also comes from the coastal regions of the country. Here we are talking about mussels, which are also fished locally. They are especially popular in the countries east of the Adriatic Sea, and buzara is also a popular dish in Croatia. The dish is often prepared with grilled vegetables or a vegetable sauce - but what must never be missing is Olive oil* and garlic. White wine is also very popular for preparation.

Riblja Čorba

One of the most famous Montenegrin dishes is Riblja Čorba, fish soup. This is a tasty thick soup with different kinds of fish. Here the cooks combine up to ten different kinds of fish in one soup. It is a very popular dish among the locals, so it is definitely worth trying.

Carp from Skadar

For those who are not the biggest fans of soup, but still do not want to miss the delicious fish dishes, carp from Skadar is a good choice. Because fish is caught not only by the sea, but also in one of the large lakes of the country, the Skadar Lake. Here there are plenty of carps that are transformed into delicious meals in different ways in the area around the lake. Often, however, an unusual combination comes to light: fresh fruit, such as apples, plums or even blueberries are served with the carp.
