Momo is a kind of dumpling, which can be found similarly in many Asian countries. Momos are similar to gyozas in Japanese cuisine, mandu in Korean cuisine and buuz in Mongolian cuisine. These little treats await you in all corners of Nepal and are suitable as a snack as well as a main course. 

The noodle dough encases either a vegetable filling or meat. Traditionally, momos are served with a dipping sauce, which can be spicy or hot.

Dal Bhat 

A trip to Nepal without trying this great dish is virtually impossible. Dal Bhat is the Nepalese everyday dish par excellence. Every day or even several times a day, a large part of the Nepalese population eats this meal. It may sound monotonous at first, but it is not necessarily so.

Dal Bhat can be prepared in many different ways. The main ingredient of this dish usually remains the same, because as the name says in Nepali, it consists of lentils (dal) and rice (bhat). Variation is provided by alternating spice mixtures and a wide variety of side dishes. The dish is usually served with some vegetable curry (tarkari). The following typical side dishes are served with it: flat bread (chapati), yogurt, spinach, dried yak cheese, spicy chutneys and pickled vegetables. Dal Bhat is served with side dishes on a tray, which you can then eat traditionally with your fingers.

Chatamari

This dish is also known as the "Pizza of Nepal". This name comes from the fact that you are served a kind of crêpe, which consists of rice flour. This thin, round bread is topped with various spicy toppings. According to traditional recipe, you can expect minced meat, chopped onions, eggs, coriander, chilies & many other spices.

Thukpa

Warming soups are especially popular in the cold highlands of Nepal. This includes thukpa, a typical local noodle soup in Kathmandu. There are also different variations, such as mixed thukpa. What is crispy, sweet and fluffy at the same time? That's right, the sel roti. This delicacy is popular in Nepal as a breakfast or snack. Traditionally, they are served at certain festivals, including Tihar and Dashain. Craving for sweets, these rings are guaranteed to satisfy. Made from rice, you can expect a sort of deep-fried, ring-shaped bread. To neutralize the sweetness, they are often dipped in yogurt. You can buy this great snack at many street food stands.

Yomari

One of the best desserts in Nepal is yomari. Behind it is dough made from rice flour, which is shaped into candy, traditionally filled with molasses and sesame seeds, and then steamed. Other fillings may include chocolate or chaku, a mixture of sugar cane juice, jaggery, ghee and nuts. This is usually accompanied by a sweet sauce. Yomari is a very popular holiday dish, and is often prepared for harvest festivals.
