Already the Telgraph reports 2019 about the abandoned ghost town Engilchek. In this village in the southeast of the Issyk-Kul region, begins the story of a ghost town in Kyrgyzstan. It is located near the border with China, but always kept close contact with the Soviet Union.
In the Soviet era, mining towns in Kyrgyzstan flourished for decades. As a result, dozens of towns and villages were founded. Mostly in remote areas, like Engilchek. Mining led to well-developed towns, and infrastructure grew rapidly. As a result, vital buildings, such as hospitals and schools, were built for about 5,000 inhabitants.
This is how Engilchek became a ghost town
However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, unemployment grew. The mines were closed and as a result the city began to lose its population. The remaining families slowly died out, leaving behind abandoned houses, playgrounds, a hospital and even an airfield. The history of the ghost town of Engilchek reflects the ghosts of the past, which can still be experienced when visiting Kyrgyzstan.
