When you think of Nepal, thoughts of dizzying heights on Mount Everest and breathtaking views come to mind. But that's not all Nepal has to offer. The friendly people, the unique wildlife, enchanting trekking trails, impressive mountain villages and much more makes Nepal unique as a travel destination.
Come with us on our Nepal trip and Rakesh, our resident tour guide, will lead you through the unique landscapes around the Himalayas and teach you a lot about the diverse culture of Nepal.

Hello Rakesh, you are our partner and tour guide for Nepal. Tell us a little about yourself!

I have been working in Nepal and the Himalayas for over 10 years in tourism, social and sustainable development. I discovered my passion for travel when I was traveling in the Nepalese Himalayas and had the opportunity to discover extraordinary and remote places. I wanted to share these experiences with others, so I decided to show travelers from all over the world the best of Nepal and the Himalayan regions, exploring local communities with them and thus supporting local and social tourism. My interests naturally include traveling, both in my country and around the world, reading books, and writing. I dream of writing my own book one day ☺. I am also a strong advocate of sustainable travel and tourism that benefits the remote and rural communities of Nepal. For this reason, we support local communities on our trips through education, health, environmental and tourism infrastructure development projects. I also believe that travel has the power to positively change both the traveler and the local communities. It is important to us to ensure that each and every experience is meaningful to the traveler and allows for personal growth and development. I welcome you to our country Nepal and look forward to sharing my lifelong experience in Nepal with you and showing you the most beautiful places of my country.

What three words would you use to describe Nepal and what do they mean to you?

Diverse: In a small country, nature is so diverse, landscapes range from 200 m to 8848 m within 5 latitudes, which cannot be found anywhere in the world like this. The climate, people and vegetation are also unique.

Spiritual: People are relaxed and take life as it is.

Himalaya: The Himalayas are the fascination and dream of many people around the world. Everyone wants to see it once in a lifetime.

What do you find most difficult about being a tour guide? How do you overcome it?

Answering new questions that you haven't answered before is always a difficult part of a tour guide's job; we always have to update ourselves; approach and study new things in order to master them later. Besides, it is a challenge every time to make sure that the guests have the best local and authentic experiences.
Another issue is that guests sometimes get lost; in cities, Google Maps has solved this problem to some extent, but when hiking in the mountains, it becomes difficult.

Which part of the country should you visit on your first trip to Nepal?

For a first visit to Nepal, I would recommend Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan with a little hiking along the foothills of the Himalayas to see all the elements of Nepal and the diversity.

What's your favorite local tradition?

The Dashain festival, which is similar to Christmas. There, all family members come together, one is blessed by the elders and one enjoys good food together.

Anything else you'd like to share about Nepal?

In Nepal, guests are considered God and are received as such. So visit Nepal! Our hospitable people will treat guests as God and give you the best experience.
Travels to more rural, unconventional areas of Nepal away from mass tourism, such as Humla, Dolpo and far western Nepal.

What was the biggest emergency you had to deal with? What did you do?

A lost passport of a guest. This kind of thing happens once in 5 years. If the passport is not found, we have to go to the nearest embassy and process the application further.

How do you make every tour an unforgettable experience?

We treat every guest like a friend. In this way, guests are open and we are open to many new experiences. This makes every tour unforgettable. If we do the tour only as a guide and the guest as a customer, it looks like a choreographed tour and the guest cannot have an authentic and real experience.

What's your best advice when it comes to sustainable travel hacks?

Don't spend money on souvenirs when traveling and don't give too much money to beggars, especially in tourist hotspots and sacred places, as this is not a sustainable way to support the community.
We use local jobs in the region and whenever possible we refill water instead of buying water in plastic bottles.

What do you like about working with TripLegend?

Our ethos, vision, principles and mission for sustainable and responsible travel align. We are strong advocates and practitioners of sustainable and community-building travel, as is TripLegend, so it's great to work with you. We also want every guest to have authentic, genuine and immersive experiences, not just see point A and point B.
The most important thing is the people, connections and friends we work with; Alex, Mona and the entire TL team are great people to work with as a team.
