The nine Cape Verde islands south of Africa could not be more different. The island nation of Cape Verde is becoming increasingly popular among world explorers. Because of the diversity of the islands, there is something for everyone. But with all the beautiful scenery, we should also do something to preserve it. We'll now tell you how you can travel sustainably on Cape Verde.
Small accommodations
It is better to book a local accommodation run by the locals and typical for the country than an all-inclusive resort. With local accommodations, you can be sure that the people of Cape Verde will benefit from the profits and your sustainable stay.
You still don't want to do without a little luxury on your trip? Then you should stay at the 4* Hotel Morabeza on Sal. The Morabeza has its own seawater desalination plant. The water used in the hotel comes from the ocean and is treated for further use.
Careful use of resources
Even if you are on a trip, it is advisable to use resources sustainably. Therefore, do not waste water. Shower only briefly and don't let water run pointlessly.
The tap water is not drinkable! So rather buy few big water bottles instead of many small plastic bottles. You can then transfer the water into a reusable bottle and take it with you on excursions.
Reduce waste
The islands of the state of Cape Verde have a big garbage problem. The garbage does not simply disappear from the islands. Most of the time you can see huge garbage dumps in the middle of the dunes. To avoid supporting the problem, it is better to dispose of your garbage at home. For example, your empty shampoo bottle. You can give the empty water bottles you bought to the rural people. They will reuse your "garbage".
Consumption
Watch your consumption on your trip. On the Cape Verde Islands almost everything has to be imported, only little comes from the own production. Therefore, it is better to go to the buffet twice than to fill your plate the first time.
In restaurants you should avoid meat dishes and fruit. All this must be imported. Rather stick to the dishes and desserts with seafood, fish, bananas and coconuts. Also enjoy the "local" caipirinha. This is made from locally produced grogue (a sugar cane liquor). This way you support the regional production.
Aluguer
Away from the cities in Cape Verde, there are no bus connections. The shared cabs "Aluguer" are then the basis of public transport. The vehicles have fixed routes. At any point of the route you can hail a shared cab. Compared to a normal cab, the prices are much cheaper. But you have to expect longer waiting times. In order to attract more passengers, the Aluguers often drive around the blocks. Therefore, the departure may be delayed. So plan enough time.
The shared cabs are very often used by the island population. So you can easily get into conversation with the locals and make contacts.
Sustainable excursions
Instead of a catamaran tour, take a long walk on the sandy beaches or a hike through the national parks of the islands. Some parks are even UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you want to observe turtles, you can book a tour through a sustainable organization. Just be aware, it is nature and nothing is guaranteed. Therefore, don't be disappointed if you don't see any.
The nine islands are very different. Therefore, it is worth to explore the islands all by themselves on foot or by bike. So take your time, because there is much to discover.
