The 5 most charming cities of Georgia

Table of Contents

Nestled in the valleys and surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia's cities have a unique setting. Explore the country's exciting history and experience the charm of Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Gori.

Tifilis: The city of hot springs

Most beautiful cities of Georgia: Tbilisi

The city is the capital of Georgia and is known for its diverse architecture and spaciousness mixed with the fresh atmosphere of a modern cosmopolitan city. Few cities have suffered as much complete destruction in the past as this one, and yet the mixture of peoples has still given today's Tbilisi the charm of oriental poetry.

The Bethlehem district is the oldest part of the city and will take you on a journey through time with its historic buildings. Here you can admire the most beautiful houses in the "Tbilisi style", discover the remains of the historically important fire temple and take a walk through times gone by.
The Antschischati Church is also worth a visit. It dates back to the 6th century, making it the oldest church in the whole city.

Numerous baths invite you to relax, because of which the city is very popular. The hot, sulphurous springs have a healing effect and are a great experience that you should not miss.

Kutaisi

Kutaisi

In Kutaisi you will find lovingly decorated restaurants with a living room atmosphere, monasteries, an exciting market, where hardly any tourists stray, a scary and beautiful amusement park and breathtaking nature. There is hardly a better place to get to know a new city than at the market. Delicious local specialties, spices and nice locals who are happy to explain and advise you.

If you prefer to experience some culture, you can visit the Bagrati Cathedral, the church is at least 1000 years old and the landmark of the city. From the mountain on which the cathedral stands, you also have a far-reaching view over the whole city. The old funicular also offers a great view. The little cable car exudes a lot of Soviet charm and takes you up over the Rioni River to an abandoned amusement park. Even though the attractions are shut down, the atmosphere is unique.

If you have some more time, you should also explore the surroundings of Kutaisi and visit for example the Prometheus Cave.

Gori

The city is known as the birthplace of Stalin, which is why you can visit his birthplace and the Stalin Museum here. Another main attraction is the 10 km distant Cave City Upliscian as well as the "Goris Tsikhe", the castle ruins perched on a hill above the city, which was once a medieval citadel. From here you can also enjoy a breathtaking view over the city of Gori.

Batumi: The Las Vegas of the Caucasus

In the south of Georgia lies the city of Batumi on the Black Sea coast. The port city of Batumi and its surroundings are without a doubt one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Here you can enjoy the Black Sea coast and discover the lively city. The Piazza enchants its visitors with stained glass and architecture and the Batumi Boulevard is also very popular with its visitors because of the modern sculptures, fountains, cafes and especially because of the casinos, which are strung together like a string of pearls, which is why the city is also called the Las Vegas of the Caucasus.

In Batumi you can take time to relax, enjoy a good wine in the old town, get some fresh air with a walk along the Black Sea and enjoy a sundowner on the Alphabetic Tower at Miracles Park.

Wardsia: The Cave City

Once upon a time, the whole town Wardsia carved by human hands into the rock walls of the 500 m high mountain Eruschetis. There are a total of 700 halls, rooms and passageways, all connected by a branching cave system. In the past, there was room for up to 50,000 people. Monks used the cave city as a dwelling for many years and it was also a popular place as a refuge from enemies, as it had everything that a normal city had: Bakeries, baths, libraries, stables and even running water and fresh air, through a special canal system.
