Supporting the conservation of wildlife, land and culture is a great thing to do, but if you've ever wanted to do more than just give financial support, a visit to the Naankuse Wildlife Reserve could be just what you're looking for.

In 2003 the Naankuse Foundation of Dr. Rudie and his wife Marlice van Vuuren Founded. Marliece grew up on a farm that was committed to wildlife conservation and had a great desire to achieve her own sanctuary for injured wildlife, which she realized with the establishment of the Naankuse Foundation. Together with many helpers, they transformed the initially small farm into the now world-renowned sanctuary for wildlife.

Today, Naankuse Reserve covers 25,000 hectares of Namibia's unique landscape and is committed to the conservation of nature and its wildlife through world-class conservation practices and exclusive ecotourism. In addition to caring for the wildlife, the Foundation is also involved in research, medical care and schools in various parts of the country.

Location of the Naankuse Reserve

The wildlife sanctuary is nestled in the Namibian bush and provides safe care and a second chance for injured, orphaned and conflicted animals. The founders of the Nankuse Reserve are committed to preserving Namibia's land, culture and wildlife through dedication, education and scientific research, and to keeping Namibia's wildlife exactly where it belongs - in the wild. For this reason, they release animals whenever possible. Only those that are too sick or injured to be released back into the wild remain in the sanctuary permanently.

Work of the Naankuse Reserve

Orphaned animals are raised with dedication and their natural needs are carefully considered. The animals are deprived of the feeling of "captivity" and instead an environment is created in which their natural behaviours are maintained and encouraged, thus increasing their chances of eventual release into the wild. The sanctuary provides a home for the smallest meerkats, mongooses and rock hyraxes, through to the largest carnivores such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs, with a wide range of feathered, furred and scaled animals in between. You're sure to quickly find your favourite among all the animals when you visit.

To share others in their passion for Namibian wildlife and conservation, they offer the unique experience of volunteering at the animal sanctuary. Here you can get active yourself and do something good: So why not get your hands dirty and turn your next holiday into an adventure?

Start your day by preparing breakfast for the cheetahs, leopards, lions and African wild dogs in rehabilitation or permanent care at the sanctuary. As a volunteer, you don't just stand by and watch, you get involved in all the daily activities such as feeding the animals, cleaning the enclosures, research and tracking or physical work such as building new facilities and creating a new home for the animals.

After a hard day's work, you can sit around the campfire with the other volunteers and let the day end. The Naankuse Reserve is a place where you can grow beyond yourself, broaden your horizons, find yourself and of course meet many like-minded people, some of whom become real friends from colleagues. Many who have volunteered there have lost their hearts to this wonderful place and return regularly.
