Thailand: The 5 most impressive national parks

Table of Contents

Thailand is known for beautiful beaches, delicious food and breathtaking landscapes. The most beautiful of these are summed up in the country's more than 130 national parks. These are well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park: The Island Paradise

This is what Thailand is known for: Several small islands, a bit mountainous and views that tempt you to dream. In Mu Koh Ang Thong National Park you will find all this. 42 small paradise islands are scattered in the deep blue of the ocean, from the higher points you can see the whole area. An unreal feeling, who gets to see this sight for the first time, may think he is really dreaming. These island worlds look like in a picture book.

But not only the views are breathtaking. The islands themselves also have it all. They combine great nature with beautiful beaches that invite you to sunbathe. What is more beautiful than a deep red sunset over the sea after an exciting adventure in the wilderness of the islands? The boat rides in the bright sunshine complete the experience and make a visit to Mu Koh Ang Thong National Park unforgettable.

Sai Yo in Thailand

Waterfalls, caves, river trips: all this and much more is part of the trip to Sai Yok National Park. This is located in the west of the country near the border with Myanmar and is over 900 km² in size. In addition to exciting natural spectacles, you can also enjoy life to the fullest here: Many leisure activities are available in and around the national park, such as river trips on a party boat or tours through the deep caves of the mountains. And there are plenty of mountains here, covered by dense jungle: teak trees and bamboo forests can be found here en masse. A paradise for exciting expeditions and invigorating nature impressions.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Watching over the mountains of Doi Inthanon are the gilded spires of the magnificent chedis built in honor of former King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. They are the highlight of this park and the hike to the structures, adorned with detailed decorations, is well worth the effort. But the journey is also the destination: the dense jungles here in the north of the country give impressions that could not describe Thailand's interior better. The journey from Chiang Mai is not too far and easily accessible by bus.

Erawan National Park

If you are in Bangkok, the Erawan National Park is a must. It's not far, so even a day trip from the capital is worth it. Once out of the noisy hustle and bustle of the vibrant city, Erawan holds fresh air and spectacular nature. The highlight of this national park is the Erawan Waterfall, whose steps are reminiscent of the white sinter terraces from Turkey.

Kaeng Krachan National Park

With almost 3000 km², Kaeng Krachan National Park is the largest park in all of Thailand. But not only the size is amazing, also the many secrets that the large park hides in itself. Several wild animals live in the seemingly endless forests, many animal species are unique here or even threatened with extinction. Here they have a safe retreat where they can live in the wild. So it is almost impossible to walk past the different inhabitants without noticing them.

With a local guide, however, you can also discover the animals that are otherwise not so easy to find. Huge elephants cavort here, but tapirs and rare big cats like tigers and leopards can also be found in the forests. During a walk on one of the widely branched paths, colorful, palm-sized butterflies often flutter around your head while several different bird species soar through the air.

Tarutao Marine National Park

Tarutao in Malay stands for something like "mysterious" and "old" and these words probably describe the marine park best. The dark forests reach all the way to the water's edge, with thick trees crowding close together. The mighty trunks of the mangroves reach diameters of up to one meter on some islands.

Only at the water's edge do the large palm trees line up above the brilliant white sand. The unreal atmosphere provides the magical aura that the park radiates over its entire area. The untouched nature on one of the many islands gives sea turtles the opportunity to lay their eggs here until the little turtle babies crawl through the sand the waves of the sea. The visit of this extraordinary park is especially suitable in the months of November to April, because in the other half of the year the monsoon ravages the park.
