5 Highlights in Nepal you will never forget

Nepal Highlights

Table of Contents

Deep in the Himalayan mountains lies the highest country on earth: Nepal. Besides Mount Everest, Nepal has many other highlights to offer. Here you can find our insider tips for the far away country.

Pokhara: The cave highlight in Nepal

In the middle of the land of mountains lies the vibrant city of Pokhara. Just a stone's throw away, on the southern edge of the city, is the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. This cave stretches for three kilometers underground, making it the longest cave in Nepal. Its walls, streaked with cave water, give the mystical environment its unique aura.

As soon as you enter the underground worlds, you will feel the spiritual atmosphere. You are not the first, because already early peoples of Nepal used the cave to pay homage to the Hindu deity Shiva. Shrines to this and other Hindu deities were found by the cave's 16th century explorers. In addition to these cultural artifacts, the cave has impressive large stalagmites and a lake with crystal clear water, which transforms the soundscape of the cave into a magical atmosphere.

Movie Garden: The outdoor cinema experience in the jungle

If you are already in Pokhara, here is a highlight for the evening, which certainly few would have expected from Nepal. Only a few people know the small outdoor cinema Movie Garden, which invites you to watch selected movies on the slope of a mountain. Next to the screen, jungle plants entwine along the high rock walls and certainly make this experience unforgettable. This is a great way to enjoy warm summer nights in the bustling city.

Kathmandu: The legendary capital in the Himalayas

The largest city in Nepal has just under one million inhabitants. This is where most explorations of Nepal begin, as the capital is home to the largest international airport. But even before the adventure in the mountains begins, there is plenty to experience in Kathmandu. In particular, the Thamel district is known for its culinary arts and exciting nightlife. The equipment for the upcoming tour can also be purchased here in numerous outdoor stores. Many fair stores offer a wide selection of handmade, eco-friendly clothing that also blends in with the Nepalese environment in terms of style.

Momos, the Nepalese dumplings with various fillings, should definitely be tried in the many restaurants. The delicious dal bhat is also worth ordering - especially if you are very hungry, because in almost every restaurant there are unlimited free refills of dal bhat as soon as the plate is empty. A true Nepalese tradition.

Poon Hill: Unique sunrise

Located 3200 meters above sea level, Poon Hill offers its visitors a unique view of a spectacular panorama of Himalayan peaks. From here, two of the fourteen 8000-meter peaks of our planet can be seen, which in the morning are bathed in a magical orange color by the rising sun. It is truly worth getting up early for this sunrise. Six other mountains frame the gigantic panorama with their snow-covered peaks.

Chitwan National Park: Stunning nature

The oldest national park in Nepal was not without reason declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 and is still home to unique animals and plants as well as breathtaking landscapes. Large parts of the national park are covered with primeval forests, the word Chitwan stands for "heart of the jungle". Here a safari through the dense forests is suitable to experience nature up close. This can be done not only by off-road vehicle, but also on foot along narrow paths. This way the native animals are not driven away by the loud engines and with some luck you will get to see rhinos, bears, tigers or even elephants. Local guides know their stuff and take care never to get too close to the dangerous animals.

In many places, people still offer to ride on the backs of captive elephants. In order to counter this activity, which is harmful to the animals, animal protection organizations in the Chitwan National Park have sustainable solutions designed. For example, an Elephant Happy Hour can be booked at StandUp4Elephants: Elephants, which otherwise have to carry tourists on their backs, can be bought free from the elephant drivers for a while and can be observed enjoying their free time in their natural habitat. In addition, employees explain more about the life of the elephants and how they are helped here.
