Kenya is a country in eastern Africa known for its game reserves and safaris. What you may not know is that the country also has a long coastline along the Indian Ocean. As a result, there are a number of incredible sandy beaches here. The choice is yours: would you rather head to quiet, picturesque beaches like Nyali near Mombasa, or would you like to try surfing on a beach like Diani? Whether you're looking for water sports, seclusion, or breathtaking views, you'll find it all on Kenya's coast.
Kilifi Beach
A few kilometers north of Mombasa lies Kilifi Beach. Kilifi is a small coastal town with sugar sand beaches and plenty of history. On one side, lush greenery borders the sandy coast, and on the other lies the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Take time to cruise the water on a dhow, a traditional Kenyan boat. There are a handful of incredible seafood restaurants perched right above the water, offering affordable food with unparalleled views.
Travel Tip: Don't leave Kilifi without trying the cocktail dawa, garnished with a piece of local sugar cane.
Nyali Beach
Nyali is a great beach located just minutes outside of Mombasa. Due to its proximity to the city, Nyali is a great destination for excursions. However, with numerous hotels right on the coast, it is also the perfect place for a beach vacation. Nyali is rarely crowded and one of the best places to visit in Kenya. If you want to relax, the white sandy beach is ideal for unwinding or just walking along the water. Just a short walk from the beach, you'll find a variety of local and international restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat.
Malindi Beach
Malindi is a famous tourist destination in Kenya for several reasons. First, it is the place where the explorer Vasco de Gama finally landed in Africa. Today, Malindi is one of the most popular beach destinations in Kenya, offering a fantastic climate, beautiful views and many wonderful waterfront hotels. It is also the perfect place for sailing, windsurfing and deep sea fishing. Also, don't forget your snorkeling gear to explore the coral reef south of the city center. The local restaurants and bars have a colorful crowd, and you'll find fantastic cuisine as well as some lively nightspots.
Lamu Beach
Just off the north coast of Kenya lies Lamu Island. This destination is absolutely pedestrian friendly. However, if you've already tired your legs, donkeys are the most popular mode of transportation. You can explore some of the island's many beaches on a dhow boat, which is definitely recommended! Back on land, make your way to Shela Beach on the north side of Lamu. It's just a short walk from Lamu town, and the shoreline is all shells and sand. Best of all, the locals sell homemade samosas right on the beach, which are some of the best food on the island!
Diani
The lush vegetation of the surrounding area contrasts sharply with the white powder beaches and turquoise waters, giving Diani a radiant setting. There is a wide range of accommodations: beach resorts, hotels, hostels, and tree houses for honeymooners. If you're not a water sports enthusiast, you can hang out in the Colobus Sanctuary or hug a tree in the Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest. Based on the number of annual visitors, Diani Beach is the most popular beach in all of Kenya. Located just a mile south of Tiwi Beach, Diani is easily accessible from Mombasa and offers numerous amenities and infrastructure.
Just off the coast you'll find a beautiful coral reef, plenty of shade from the palm groves and underwater sandbars. Whether you want to swim, snorkel or surf, you can do it all at Diani Beach. Also, many great bars and restaurants await you in the area.
Watamu
Watamu is a charming village on the Kenyan coast known for its pristine white sands. As part of the Watamu National Marine Park, this is a great place for diving and snorkeling. The coral reefs are home to all kinds of colorful underwater life, and they also provide breakwaters for surfers.
At low tide, you can walk out into the shallow water for miles. Even if you only go out for a few minutes, it can be a special experience. Watamu has a number of excellent hotels and restaurants just steps from the beach, allowing you to spend a whole day or even a night in this environment.
