When in Namibia When the sun slowly approaches the horizon, you can marvel at the breathtaking play of colors. Where in Namibia you can best watch the sunset, we tell you today. From national parks, to the desert, to coastal resorts, we take you to six unique places.
Etosha National Park
What many do not expect in the dry inland of Namibia is much water. However, the Etosha National Park proves the opposite. Here you are treated to an incredibly beautiful scenery, which is made up of dry salt pans in northern Namibia and the many waterholes in the park. The recurring rains fill these waterholes, which attracts a variety of wildlife and birds: flamingos, lions, elephants, rhinos but also giraffes, leopards and many other animals can be spotted here.
This scenery shines particularly impressively when the surroundings shine in the golden light of the evening sun and the fiery red sun slowly disappears behind the horizon. Therefore, Etosha National Park is best suited to go on safari at sunset.
Namib-Naukluft National Park
Watching the sunset here is something you really shouldn't miss. The national park was named after the Naukluft Mountains and is located in a part of the famous Namib Desert. The national park stretches all the way to the coast of Namibia and ends in lagoons and waterways near the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can also discover the surreal landscape of Sossusvlei, as well as the unique flora and fauna that has adapted to the unique terrain over many years. However, this area is also particularly worth seeing because of the quiver tree, for which Namibia is famous. In the light of the setting sun these trees glow purple, before the sky also shines in this color and the rest of the scenery turns into silhouettes. A unique scenery awaits you here!
The Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari Desert stretches through South Africa, Botswana and Namibia and is home to one of Africa's oldest peoples: the San Bushmen. Wildlife is also represented here, as it is home to the endangered Cape wild dog, elephants which are adapted to the desert, desert lions and also brown hyenas. Watching the sunset in a desert should be on every bucket list. The warm tones of the sand almost compete with the sun, while the ongoing natural spectacle makes the sky slowly glow in different colors. The sky offers a dreamlike contrast to the silhouette of the desert.
Swakopmund
Watching the sunset by the sea has an incredibly relaxing effect. The vastness of the water has a calming effect and iridescent colors of the evening red are reflected in the surging masses of water. Swakopmund, a town on Namibia's Skeleton Coast, makes such an experience possible. The picturesque setting seems surreal as the warm colors of the sand dunes meet the cool blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The sea is home to a wide variety of marine life, including Cape fur seals, great white shark and dolphins. You may even be able to observe some of them from a distance. Grab a blanket to enjoy the sunset from the beach or visit one of the restaurants, which offer a fantastic view of the evening spectacle of nature.
Spitzkoppe
Granite peaks rising from red dunes are known as Spitzkoppe and are estimated to be 120 million years old. Weathering by wind and sand, these peaks have formed unique formations and are therefore a very popular sight in the country. Very popular for a self-drive safari, this place is perfect for camping in a tent. When the evening glow hits the rock formations, they shimmer in warm red tones.
If you plan to spend the night in the desert, we recommend enjoying the evening light around a campfire. The pink evening sky highlights the red dunes and granite peaks, which makes this setting so magical. When the sun has already disappeared and the crystal clear night sky reveals the first stars, it is worth looking up even longer. After a breathtaking sunset, you can still look at the beautiful starry sky here, before you then go to sleep in your tent or make your way back.
