The Georgian Supra: The Feast of Your Life

Table of Contents

Before you embark on your Georgian journey, it's important that you know the basics of Georgian Supra. The Supra is, of course, more than just a Georgian feast. It's a centuries-old tradition that creates an opportunity for guests to connect and share with one another. While toasting to life, everyone brings something different to the table with the stories they tell and the speeches they give.

It's important that you follow the basic rules during your Supra to have the best experience. That's why TripLegend is here to help you experience your first Supra like a local Georgian.

The role of the Tamada

A Georgian supra always has a toastmaster, a tamada, who leads the party and introduces each toast during the party. The tamada is chosen by the host at the beginning of the party and speaks at length about a topic before each toast. It is an unwritten rule that the tamada should drink all his alcohol after the toast.

When the tamada's speech is over, guests can contribute to the discussion with their stories. A tamada must be a person of respect who should create a real Georgian party atmosphere and make the guests feel comfortable throughout the party.

Toasts during the Supra

We have a in-depth articles about the toasts and themes during a Georgian Supra. Since Christianity plays an important role in the lives of Georgians, the first toast is always in the name of God. The Tamada then gives a speech about the blessings of God and the place of Christianity in their culture.

At a typical supra, guests stand and toast the deceased as well. They remember their lost loved one who could not share this special moment with them. The toast to the deceased is always followed by a toast to life. The tamada ensures that the guests celebrate life with a reminder that it is worth living.

Eating during a Supra in Georgia

Throughout the feast, the table is full of delicious food. Expect Pkhali (spinach and walnut salad balls), Pakhlava (sweet pastry), Khachapuri (juicy dough pancake filled with a lot of cheese) and Badrijani Nigvzit (fried eggplant with walnut sauce) on a traditional Georgian supra table.

With Supra, Georgians have turned feasting into an art form. Supra is all about festivity, life, the motherland of Georgia, delicious food and laughter.
