The 3 best surf spots in Iceland

Table of Contents

Surfing in Iceland is one of the most unpredictable, cold and beautiful experiences you will ever have. It's almost impossible to predict what each day at the surf spot will bring, and you'll never have the same wave twice. This makes it a bit difficult to know what to expect. Nevertheless, especially experienced surfers will definitely have fun at Iceland's waves during the fall-winter months.

Sandvik- Beginners

Sandvik in Iceland is also suitable for beginners, in spite of the more advanced surf spots.

Finding a surf spot for beginners can be difficult in Iceland, as most of the country's surf spots are located at point breaks. However, some of the black sand beaches on the south coast of Iceland, like Porlákshöfn or Sandvík, are great spots to try if you haven't mastered the basics of surfing yet.

Best time: Sandvik on the Reykjanes Peninsula is an exposed beach break with constant surf that works all year round. The offshore winds blow from the east-northeast, and there is no protection from breezes from the other side of the shore here. Groundswells are more common than windswells and the ideal wave direction is west-southwest. The beach breaks offer left and right handers. A secluded wave spot that is never crowded. The best season for surfing Sandvik with consistent clean waves is winter and most often the month of February.

Eyvik

Eyvik, a nice spot on Tjörnes with easy access and nice view! It is a small beachbreak that is very clean both left and right. Crystal clear water with black sand on the bottom. Worth a look if you are in the area.

Best time: Eyvik on the north coast of Iceland is an exposed beach break with constant surf that works all year round. It works best with offshore winds from the south-southeast, and there is no protection from breezes from the other side of the coast here. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely, and the best wave direction is from the north. The beach break offers left and right handers. Crowds are never a problem here. The best season for surfing in Eyvik with consistently clean waves is autumn and most often the month of October.

Grindavik - For experts

Best time: Grindavik Antenas on the Reykjanes Peninsula is an exposed point break with very consistent waves that works all year round. The best wind direction is north-northwest, and there is no protection from breezes from the other side of the shore here. Clean swells prevail, and the best wave direction is from the west. There is no point break. The best wave to surf is at high tide. Even when the surf is high, crowds are unknown. The best season for surfing Grindavik Antenas with consistent clean waves is summer and most often the month of July. Watch out for the rocks!

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is not one of the most common sports in Iceland. Due to the fast changing winds you should be an experienced kiter if you want to throw yourself into Iceland's water! Some spots where you can kite in good winds are Jökulsarlon, the Icebergalsom on the southeast coast (for professionals only). In the south near Vik you will find Dyrholaey, a volcanic beach with crescent bays. You can visit all the fjords between Höfn and Eskifjördur and the mosquito lake. Myvatn kite. The Pingvallavatn also offers the best conditions for beginners.

Best time: Difficult to determine due to changing winds and storms- possible in summer as well as winter.
