In Georgia, the rural regions are mostly heated with wood, for which many trees have to be cut down. To counteract this and to protect nature and the beauty of the landscape, there are some sustainable projects in the country. You can find the most exciting ones here.
Green Transformation Georgia
The German Society for International Cooperation is implementing the Green Transformation Georgia project. This involves planting trees to restore the natural ecological balance. In some regions of the country, the lush forests have suffered many losses in recent years. They have been cleared in order to heat houses. Now the project aims to help restore the large forests. This will not only rebuild local nature and provide a habitat for animals, but also reduce CO2 filtered out of the air by the new trees.
Morgenstadt City Lab Tbilisi
The capital Tbilisi is the only metropolis with millions of inhabitants in the country at the foot of the Caucasus. The city is constantly developing and solutions are being sought to make this sustainable. In particular, air pollution from vehicles and industry is to be reduced in order to improve the quality of the air in the city. In order to find new ways to take advantage of the opportunities offered by a city that continues to develop, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Morgenstadt convened the Tbilisi City Lab and developed solutions for the environment. This involved looking at what other cities around the world are already doing right and how this can be used in Tbilisi.
Social entrepreneurial herbal project in Argokhi village
Since a large part of the Georgian population lives in rural areas, ecological projects often pay attention to rural areas. This project was financed by the non-profit organization EthicFinance. It was important to involve the inhabitants of the village. Thus, they were taught how to grow herbs properly, and land, seeds and knowledge were provided.
The young villagers were then taught economic skills and how to cultivate the fields in a sustainable and ecologically sound manner. This not only helps the environment, but also the population living in the countryside. The aim is also to create new perspectives, as many people emigrate from Georgia in order to have better economic prospects in other parts of the world.
Three Alazani Rivers Biosphere Reserve
Biosphere reserves are large areas where innovative research is carried out to implement long-term sustainable ideas. These areas are then research zones for science, where a sustainable future is looked at together with the population. "Three Alazani Rivers" is to become the first biosphere reserve in Georgia. For this purpose, an application has been submitted to UNESCO in 2021.
These and many other projects are intended to transform Georgia into a more sustainable country. In this way, the environment is to be helped in harmony with the country's inhabitants.
