Ananuri Fortress is located 70 km from Tbilisi. The medieval fortress was originally built for military purposes. In the 13th century it became the seat of the Dukes of Aragvi. In the 18th century, the fortress helped guard the retreat road in the Aragvi Valley. The location of the fortress is particularly important as it was built in the valley between the two rivers Aragvi and Vedzatkhevi. It was designed in such a way that the enemy would be immediately captured with the help of a "natural" gate. Learn here more about the fortress.
