What makes our trips special

Important information

Is it safe to travel by car through Uganda?

Yes - Uganda is one of the safest countries in all of Africa. Uganda's government assures a safe travel experience.

On which side of the road do people drive in Uganda?

You drive on the left side of the road.

Which car do we get?

4×4 SUV, automatic, with the option of a pop-up roof. In the booking process you can choose between the cars.

What is the condition of the roads?

Uganda has very good roads by African standards. Most roads leading to destinations are smooth and paved. With the exception of speed bumps, humps and sometimes potholes. On the last leg of a day's journey, you will have to drive a bit on gravel roads to get to the lodge or the park entrance gate. Inside the parks you will drive off road on dirt roads.

What are the speed limits?

You can drive up to 80 km/h on the highway and up to 50 km/h in the cities. Always pay attention to the traffic signs so as not to exceed the limit. The usual driving speed is not more than 60 km/h and in villages you should reduce the speed. On gravel roads or unpaved roads, a speed of 25-40 km/h is recommended.

What happens in the event of a breakdown or accident?

In case something happens, emergency contacts are available, which you will be informed of upon arrival. The phone numbers are available around the clock. For small problems, so-called bush mechanics can usually provide direct assistance. Depending on the problem, you will be referred to the next possible garage, or a mechanic will come directly to you. If the car cannot be repaired, a replacement vehicle will be provided. In case of an accident, contact your emergency contact immediately and take photos of the damaged vehicle.

What does car insurance cover?

The car is fully insured. The vehicles are comprehensively insured against accident and fire damage as well as against liability damage resulting from a car accident. Personal injury and property damage are covered by your health and travel insurance. Tires, underbody protection and windows are not insured. The renter is liable for all damage to the rental car and / or third party property if:

  • the maximum speed is exceeded
  • Accidents occur due to reckless driving
  • Damage to the vehicle caused by lack of care
  • driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • driving on closed roads/areas

How do you deal with traffic police in Uganda?

Uganda has a large number of traffic police officers. They can be recognized from afar by their bright white uniforms. One piece of advice that comes in handy when dealing with authority figures in Uganda is to be respectful, patient and friendly. Traffic police may stop you for a check to see if:

  • the car is insured
  • the tires are in good condition
  • you have a valid driver's license (the one from your home country and, if necessary, an international driver's license)

In the event of a misdemeanor, a fine must be paid. Getting to the nearest police station where the fine will be collected can take a long time - so better not to risk it.

How does it work with navigation?

Before traveling to Uganda, we recommend the app Maps.me to install on your cell phone and download the Uganda Map there before arrival. It is a free app that navigates offline.

Should I get a SIM card?

It is recommended to get a SIM card (provider MTN or Airtel) and load it with some phone credit if you plan to go to the parks alone.

What else should I look out for on a self-drive tour in Uganda?

To have the smoothest self-drive adventure in Uganda pay attention to the following things:

  • Always have enough cash with me (even at the gas stations is paid in cash)
  • Always take a charged cell phone with you
  • Always have enough water with you and if necessary something to eat
  • Find out in time where is the nearest gas station
  • Always park the car in a private/secured parking lot
  • Wild camping is not allowed
  • If possible, do not drive in the dark, from about 7 p.m. (many drivers sometimes do not turn on their lights, or drive with high beams).
  • Drive defensively - buses like to overtake, so always keep an eye on the rear view mirror
  • Always set the turn signal when turning and overtaking
  • Avoid potholes
  • Do not drive faster than allowed
  • Always turn on the central locking in cities
  • Do not leave valuables unattended in the car
  • Always have your driver's license with you
  • Do not overload the car
  • Always turn on your headlights
  • Drive carefully and take into account that wild animals may run in front of your car.
  • In the parks it is best to be accompanied by a ranger
  • No entrance to the national parks after 6 pm
  • You must be at least 20 years old to drive the car

Is the trip suitable for children?

Traveling by car through Uganda with children is possible and child seats for the car are provided on request. Unfortunately, children under the age of 18 cannot participate in the chimpanzee and gorilla trek for safety reasons.

Do you offer trip cancellation insurance?

Should you not be able to fly for health reasons, there is a Travel cancellation insurancee.g. from HanseMerkur.

Can I arrive earlier or leave later?

You can individually plan a few days in advance or add a few days to all our trips, as it suits you best. Of course, we are also happy to give you tips for accommodation!

What does your collaboration with local partners look like in concrete terms?

For us, supporting locals means working only with local guides, staying in local, family-run hotels, and eating at local restaurants. We often have a social/environmental cause that we incorporate into our trips (from volunteering at a wildlife rescue center in Namibia to the support of Buddhist monks in Nepal in their daily work or visiting a school in a Soviet ghost town in Kyrgyzstan and bringing soccer balls, books, pens, etc.).

Proof of a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers over the age of one year. Due to the recurring outbreaks of yellow fever, vaccination is also medically advisable. Make sure that the standard vaccinations are up to date according to the vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute. Vaccinations against hepatitis A are recommended as additional travel vaccinations, and against hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies and meningococcal disease (ACWY) for long-term stays or special exposure. Also ensure full vaccination protection against poliomyelitis (polio). Malaria: Malaria is transmitted by crepuscular and nocturnal Anopheles mosquitoes. There is a high risk of transmission throughout the country and throughout the year, especially during the months of maximum rainfall (April to May, November). Plasmodium falciparum (causative agent of malaria tropica) is detected in approximately 99% of cases. To avoid malaria, protect yourself consistently from insect bites as part of exposure prophylaxis. Depending on the travel profile, chemoprophylaxis (taking tablets) is also advisable in addition to the necessary exposure prophylaxis. Various prescription drugs (e.g. atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine) are available on the German market for this purpose. Discuss the choice of medication and its personal adaptation as well as side effects or incompatibilities with other medications with a tropical medicine doctor or travel physician before taking it. It is recommended to take a sufficient supply with you.

You have the possibility to book your round trip both with and without included flight.
