Theresa and Fritz are a couple from Germany. They travel the world and inspire people to step out of their comfort zones, and follow their dreams.
As TripLegend, we asked some questions to them about their travel experiences and picked their brain for some advice on sustainable and eco-friendly travel solutions.
Could you tell us about yourselves a bit? Our TripLegends are curious to know about you!
We are a couple from Germany, and we started our “world trip” on 9 July. Unfortunately, we can only visit Europe due to the COVID situation. For this journey, Theresa, as a teacher, took a sabbatical, and Fritz quit his job as a physiotherapist in a German first league football club.
What inspired you to travel the world? Where do you find your inspiration?
The thing that inspired us the most was to live a different life than we used to. That, in combination with our dream, to see the world was the main reason for our new way. When we made the decision, we also started to get in touch with people who had made such trips or are currently doing it. The two who inspired us the most were Marie and Jake (@mariefeandjakesnow).
What advice would you give to people who want to do the same but do not have the time because they have to work or feel a bit insecure?
Our best advice is to check your possibilities, and just do it. Many people have a dream like that, but they never dare to take the first step. If you don’t want to quit your job, ask your boss for a timeout, an unpaid vacation, or for the possibility to work remotely. If you really want it, there is always a way, but one thing is for sure that you have to get out of your comfort zone. Once the decision is made, things will get a lot easier.
What has traveling taught you about life?
Most of all that life is unpredictable. We spent so much time making plans, but life turned out differently and Corona happened. Since we started our trip, we have never planned more than seven days ahead.
The other thing we’ve learned is that being a time millionaire makes you richer than money could ever do. The freedom we are experiencing right now feels absolutely unique and we are sure that we are really lucky because not many people can feel, what we feel right now.
Which destinations are on your bucket list?
Actually, we wanted to start in Asia and before Corona, we made plans for Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, and so on. A huge dream would also be, to visit the Caribbean and New Zealand. Let’s see what life has in store for us.
Which destination should we definitely put on the TripLegend map, and why?
Our favorite destination so far was Madeira. It’s an island with a beautiful nature, different kinds of beaches and breathtaking views. Also, the food and the people are absolutely amazing. Because Madeira is a volcanic island you can experience all kinds of weather in one day. Last but not least Madeira is special to flower lovers as it is also called “flower island” or “the island of endless spring”.
We know that you actively use your social media platforms to raise awareness about climate change. Why do you think it is essential for travelers to focus on issues related to our environment?
Especially as travelers, we are part of the problem. Everyone who has ever looked into the topic of climate change knows that flying is one of the main issues. Knowing this and still wanting to travel, we needed to check our options to minimalize our carbon footprint. That’s why we decided to fly as little as necessary and also compensate for our carbon emissions. It has just been a view week ago when we found out that it is even possible to go climate neutral. So we started a collaboration with @mindful.mission.earth, a start-up from Vienna, which eliminates your carbon footprint by supporting UN-certified climate programs. We recommend everyone to have a look at them and even for non-travelers it could be very interesting.
TripLegend supports eco-friendly tourism and sustainability. We know how mass tourism jeopardizes our environment. As a couple who travels the world, could you tell us what you do to support sustainable travel?
We try to reduce our plastic consumption, eat and buy locally, and support small local businesses when going on trips. Also, we are both vegans for more than two years, which is not always easy during a big trip, but it’s the healthiest and most wholesome lifestyle you can live for yourself, our animals, and our planet.
Can you give us some tips on how to be a sustainable and responsible traveler?
Have a look at what lies within your possibilities and be conscious of every decision you make – whether it be food choices, plastic consumption, different ways of travel. Every decision you make has an impact on our planet. You choose if it’s good or bad.
What is the best advice you can give our TripLegends about traveling?
Take care of the environment you are in, respect cultures, people, and animals, and get off the beaten paths. Try new things and get in touch with locals. That’s what makes beautiful memories.
Theresa, in one of your posts you wrote about your dream to travel the world when you were just 16. Even though your parents were not supportive, you still did not give up on your dreams. How would you describe your experience as a solo female traveler?
It’s important to know that not everybody who loves you will support you when you come up with crazy plans. It’s not because they want to harm you, it’s because they want to protect you. In these moments it’s important to know what you really want. Nobody has to be confident with your dream but yourself. So my recommendation is to first manifest your goals before sharing them with others. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
What else would you like to share with us?
Our biggest goal in life is to inspire others to follow their dreams. If we can do it, you can do it, too. Cross your comfort zone!
Do not forget to follow Theresa and Fritz for a major dose of wanderlust and adventure!
