3. Addo Elephant National Park (AENP)

In 1931, the national park was established to protect the last eleven elephants remaining in the area, which until then had been spared by ivory hunters and farmers. Previously, the government had hunted the Cape elephants, which often destroyed the fields and gardens of local farmers. The killing of 130 elephants by the well-known hunter "Major P. J. Pretorius" led to public protests and eventually to the creation of the game reserve in the Addo bush, which has since been expanded several times.

Addo Elephant National Park is one of the best places to see elephants and other animals. It covers 1,640 square kilometers and also offers some of the best opportunities to see rare species such as the Cape buffalo, black rhino and African wild dog. The park is also home to over 400 species of plants and offers a stunning landscape of dense forests, savannahs and beaches. Beaches

The AENP is located in the west of South Africa's Eastern Cape province in the Sarah Baartman district, about 70 kilometers northeast of Gqeberha. The park largely covers the area of the Sundays River Valley local municipality.

4. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park

The Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park extends over 960 km². Located in the heart of Zululand, in the enchanting province of KwaZulu-Natal, this park is considered the oldest game reserve in South Africa due to its establishment in 1895.

In addition to the famous Big 5, this park is home to an abundance of other impressive animals such as giraffes, antelopes and zebras, as well as numerous smaller species that include, for example, a wide range of bird species.

It is also one of the best places to see rhinos, which are almost extinct in many other regions of Africa due to poaching. The park is also known for its variety of bird species and can be easily reached from Durban.

In addition to the national park, there is a wealth of interesting sights in the surrounding area. In the northern part of the park there are several private game reserves where you can go on safaris accompanied by experienced rangers in open jeeps!

The Zulu Croc Reptile Center is also highly recommended. Here you have the chance to see rare crocodile species. If you visit the Ilala Weavers craft center, you can admire traditional craftsmanship and even watch hand-woven baskets being made.

5. tsitsikamma national park

The name "Tsitsikamma" comes from the Khoi language and means something like "place of multiform water". The Tsitsikamma National Park stretches for 80 km along the coast of the Garden Route and covers a total area of 639.42 km². It offers beautiful coastal scenery and an abundance of activities such as whale watching, hiking and mountaineering.

The park includes a marine sanctuary, deep gorges and native vegetation, including the "Big Tree," a tall, broad-leafed stone yew. The Mouth Trail, which runs through the park, includes a spectacular suspension bridge over the Storms River, while the Otter Trail leads to Nature's Valley - an area that is home to birds such as Cape Flycatchers and other bird species.

The park is an important sanctuary for marine animals such as seals and whales, which are common along the Garden Route. Tsitsikamma is also known for its small wildlife, such as klipsheep.
