Your highlight today: Explore the temples of the Kathmandu Valley

Today we explore Patan, the second largest city in the Kathmandu Valley, and get to know the culture and history of Nepal better. After a hearty breakfast, we first explore Patan-Durbar Square. This is flanked by artistic and majestic monuments that tell a series of extremely interesting and fascinating historical facts and esoteric legends. We then visit the stupa of Swayambhunath, from where we have a wonderful view over the valley due to its high position.

On day three of our trip, we make our way to Nagarkot, where comfort and peaceful surroundings await us.
A truly unforgettable sight opens up before us as we let our gaze wander over the sublime Himalayan peaks. From the majestic peaks of Dhaulagiri in the west to the mighty Mount Everest in the east, an incredible panorama stretches out before our eyes.

Country Villa Nagarkot

Your highlight today: Explore the ancient city of Bakhtapur and attend a cooking class with a Nepalese family

Today we start with a visit to the ancient city of Bhaktapur, which was hit by an earthquake in 1934. It is therefore particularly impressive to see how the many ancient buildings, including a five-storey temple, survived the quake. The many remaining monuments are still prime examples of excellent architecture and masterpieces of craftsmanship. Before we visit one of the oldest temples in Nepal, the Changunarayan Temple, we visit a traditional painting school.
In the evening we take part in a cooking class with a Nepalese family.
We also collect our Chinese visas and Tibet Travel Permit from the Chinese embassy today.

We leave Kathmandu and head to Rasuwa Gadi, which is located in the border region between Nepal and China, close to Tibet. On the way there, we drive along the Himalayas and can marvel at its deep gorges and snow-capped mountains. Our journey also takes us through LangTang National Park, which is one of the largest nature reserves in Nepal. If we are lucky, we may even see yaks or horses in the wild here

After breakfast, we drive a short distance to the border to cross it in the direction of China. Our guide is already waiting for us on the other side. We then continue on to Kyirong. Kyirong lies at an altitude of 2800 and is surrounded by dense forests.
In the afternoon, we take a short walk to the Paba Temple, a Nepalese-style temple that impresses with its elaborate murals.

Your highlight today: Visit the highest monastery in the world

 

Our adventure today takes us first to Mt. Everest base camp. Our route takes us past vast grasslands and Lake Peikutso. On the way, at the Gawu La Pass, at an altitude of 5198m, we will also have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayas. Once we arrive at Everest Base Camp, we visit the highest monastery in the world, the Rongbuk Monastery. We then continue our journey to Tingri, where we will spend the night.

Your highlight today: Immerse yourself in the history and culture of Tibet at Tashilunpo Monastery

On the morning of day eight of our Nepal & Tibet round trip, we drive to Shigatse. On the way, we make a stopover at the 5000m G318 National Highway milestone in Lhatse. After arriving in Shigatse in the early afternoon, we visit one of the most important monasteries and the seat of the Panchen Lama, the Tashilunpo Monastery. The religious paintings on the Tibetan architecture and the chanting of the monks allow us to get a feel for the Tibetan way of life.

Your highlight today: Marvel at the turquoise mountain lakes of Tibet

Today we travel via Gyantse to Lhasa, Tibet's capital. The many Tibetan farming villages that can be seen on the way to Gyantse give us an impression of life in rural Tibet. After arriving in Gyantse, we first visit the historic old town, the Perklor Monastery and the Kumbum Stupa. Then, on our way to Lhasa, we stop at Manak Dam Lake, Korala Glacier and Yamdrok Lake. Once again we marvel at the incredible nature of Tibet.

Your highlight today: Visit the holiest temple of Tibetan Buddhism

Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and is considered the Buddhist center of the country. Our first stop today is the winter palace of the Dalai Lama, the Potala Palace. Here we can discover and marvel at countless treasures and artistically crafted cultural objects. After lunch, we visit the Jokhang Temple, which is a central sanctuary of the Tibetans and was built in the 7th century. Inside the temple is a statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, at the age of 12. Outside the temple, pilgrims can be seen prostrating themselves in front of it. Around the temple is Barkhor Street, where we can join the pilgrims and locals in the kora (a religious walk around a building) and explore the old market.
We also have the opportunity to taste traditional tea with the locals in a teahouse.

Your highlight today: Watch the monks debating in the inner courtyard of the Sera Monastery

In the morning, we visit the village of Dadong, which is located a few kilometers southwest of downtown Lhasa. It is a well-protected, ancient Tibetan village surrounded by valleys. After arriving there, we visit the Nyimatang Monastery, built in the 11th century, and take a walk around the village to see what rural life in Lhasa is like. We visit a local family and enjoy lunch prepared by the family. In the afternoon we visit the Sera Monastery, where we can admire colorful rock paintings of Buddha and sand mandalas. In the inner courtyard of the monastery, we watch the monks' debates with fascination. Afterwards, we visit a print shop for religious texts. Afterwards, we round off the day with dinner with our new friends.

Important information

Do I need to pack special clothes in winter? 

You can find all the info for the different seasons in our Packing list. Especially in winter, we strongly recommend that you take very warm clothing with you, as it can get very cold both during the day and at night. 

Do I need my own sleeping bag?

A sleeping bag is optional, as there are plenty of warm blankets on site. Nevertheless, you are welcome to bring your own sleeping bag if you like.

Do you offer trip cancellation insurance?

Should you not be able to fly for health reasons, there is a Travel cancellation insurancee.g. from HanseMerkur.

What is the minimum number of participants for the trip?

This trip has a minimum number of 2 guests. If this number is not reached 30 days before the scheduled date, TripLegend has the right to cancel the trip.

Can I arrive earlier or leave later?

You can individually plan a few days in advance or add a few days to all our trips, as it suits you best. Of course, we are also happy to give you tips for accommodation!

With whom do I share a double room?

By default, you will share a double room with a person of the same sex, but you are also welcome to book a single room.

What does your collaboration with local partners look like in concrete terms?

For us, supporting locals means working only with local guides, staying in local, family-run hotels, and eating at local restaurants. We often have a social/environmental cause that we incorporate into our trips (from volunteering at a wildlife rescue center in Namibia to the support of Buddhist monks in Nepal in their daily work or visiting a school in a Soviet ghost town in Kyrgyzstan and bringing soccer balls, books, pens, etc.).

A visa is required to enter Nepal. The tourist visa for 15 days costs about 30€.

In addition to the standard vaccinations according to the RKI, travel vaccinations against hepatitis A and typhoid, and for long-term stays or special exposure also against hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis are recommended.
