Costa Rica: The 6 most breathtaking volcanoes

Table of Contents

Costa Rica is not only known for its breathtaking natural diversity, but also for its fascinating volcanic landscape. Over 60 dormant or extinct volcanoes adorn the country, six of which are still active. The country has some of the most beautiful volcanoes in the world, each offering a unique experience. This article will introduce you to the various volcanoes in Costa Rica and take a closer look at their impressive diversity and beauty.

Arenal - the most visited volcano in the country

The Arenal in the north of Costa Rica is one of the most visited volcanoes in the country. The volcano is clearly visible from a distance thanks to its symmetrical cone shape. The Arenal last erupted in 2010 and has been dormant since then. However, the stratovolcano is still active, as can be seen from the regular clouds of smoke rising from the crater and the surrounding hot springs. The highlight is the cooled lava flows, also known as "hanging bridges", which can be seen on hikes in the National Park can be explored. You can also marvel at the "La Fortuna" waterfall and relax in the numerous hot thermal springs. Visit Lake Arenal and enjoy numerous activities such as ziplining and kayaking.

The Poás volcano

The Poás volcano is located in the central valley of the Alajuela province. With a diameter of 1.7 m, the 2708 m high volcano is considered to be one of the largest in the world. National Park was closed until August 2018. The two crater lakes are particularly striking, with one attracting attention with its turquoise-blue water. However, appearances are deceptive, as the water of the "Laguna Caliente" is both caustic and one of the most acidic in the world. The lake is also the second largest geyser in the world. Due to its proximity to the capital of Costa Rica, the stratovolcano is the perfect place for an excursion into nature. The viewing platform on the crater rim at an altitude of around 2500 m is a highlight.

The legend of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano

The Rincón de la Vienna volcano is located in the province of Guanacaste in the northwest of Costa Rica. The volcano owes its name to an old legend. The legend of the volcano says that an Indian princess fell in love with the chief of the enemy. The king then threw the chieftain into the volcano's crater. On this occasion, the princess lived in deep mourning on the slope of the crater and gave birth to her son there. This is why the volcano translates as "the place where the old woman lives". The surrounding area offers numerous sightseeing opportunities:

  • bubbling mud springs
  • numerous waterfalls
  • Fumaroles
  • Conchal beach
  • Tamarindo beach

The highest volcano in Costa Rica - Irazú

The Irazú volcano is located around 60 km from the capital San José. At 3432 m high, Irazú is both the highest and most active volcano in Costa Rica. In 1723, an eruption completely destroyed the former capital and in 1993 San José was completely covered in foot and ash. The two main craters each have a turquoise-green sulphur lake. If the weather cooperates, you can discover the Caribbean and Pacific coasts from a viewing platform on the horizon and enjoy a breathtaking view of the landscape. You can also walk along the edges of the craters.

The Turrialba volcano

The easternmost volcano in the country is Turrialba. The 3325-metre-high stratovolcano has three summit craters and is considered very active. In 2016, Juan Santamaria Airport had to be temporarily closed due to the enormous amount of ash catapulting several kilometers into the air. The highlight is the view from the summit. The breathtaking panoramic view shows the surrounding tropical rainforest and both Irazú and Poás. Around the Turriabla, you can see sugar cane fields and Coffee plantations can be visited. The rainforest also invites you to go on a hike to see orchids, bamboo, ferns and brodelten.
