Travel tips for Namibia - the land of contrasts

Table of Contents

Hello globetrotter! If you are looking for an extraordinary travel destination, then you should definitely put Namibia on your list. From the desert to the sea, from the canyons to the national parks, Namibia has something to offer for every traveler. The country in southern Africa is known for its stunning landscapes, fascinating wildlife and friendly people.

But before we get started, here are some general tips to keep in mind when traveling to Namibia:

First things first:

  • Visa: German citizens do not need a visa for Namibia if the stay does not exceed 90 days. However, it is important that your passport is valid for at least six months.
  • Climate: Namibia is a dry country and temperatures can get very hot during the day. Especially between October and March it can get unbearably hot, so we recommend a trip in the cooler season between May and September. More about the climate you can find in our article "Best time to travel Namibia".
  • Money: The local currency is the Namibia Dollar (NAD). However, the South African Rand (ZAR) is also often accepted. Most major cities have ATMs and in restaurants and hotels it is often possible to pay by credit card.

Vaccinations: Not mandatory, but recommended

Health always comes first. While there is no mandatory vaccination in Namibia, it is advisable to brush up on standard vaccinations and get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid. In some areas there is a risk of contracting malaria and other tropical diseases. Malaria prophylaxis is therefore recommended for longer stays in the wilderness. But don't worry, with the right precautions you don't have to worry about getting sick and can fully enjoy your trip. Just consult a doctor before your trip to find out which vaccinations are recommended for you.

Luggage: Pack lightly and efficiently

For a round trip through Namibia, it is recommended to take a sturdy backpack or travel bag with wheels, as many roads are not paved and traveling with a suitcase can be difficult. Namibia has a warm and dry climate, so it is recommended to wear light clothing made of breathable fabrics. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential in hot and sunny Namibia. However, it is also important to prepare for the cool nights, especially in the desert. Therefore, it is recommended to take a jacket or a sweater with you. In addition, you should pack enough water, snacks and a flashlight, as you will not always come across a gas station or supermarket.

Culture: diversity and hospitality

Namibia has a rich culture shaped by various ethnic groups. The San, Himba, Herero, Damara and Ovambo are just a few of the many ethnic groups living in Namibia. It is important to learn about and respect the culture and traditions of these communities. For example, in rural areas you should make sure to dress appropriately and not consume alcohol or tobacco products in their presence. Photographing people should also always be done with permission. In some areas, such as Himba villages, photography is even prohibited. Namibian hospitality is legendary, so don't be afraid to talk to the locals and engage with their way of life.

Infrastructure: expansion in some areas

Namibia is a sparsely populated country with an area of about 825,000 km². The infrastructure is well developed, especially in the larger cities. However, there are regions where the road conditions are worse. If you want to visit the Skeleton Coast, for example, you should rent an off-road vehicle. During the rainy season, roads may be flooded, making some areas difficult to access.

Safety: prudence and caution

Namibia is considered one of the safest countries in Africa, but like everywhere else in the world, you should take care of your valuables and avoid lonely areas at night. Overall, you don't have to worry because Namibia is a friendly and safe country with a long history of tourism.

Challenges in Namibia

Namibia is a fascinating country, but it can also be challenging. The climate is extreme in some regions and can be challenging for unprepared travelers. You will often have to travel long distances with varying terrain conditions and may have to spend a night in a tent or car. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the trip and bring the right equipment. But this is exactly what makes the country so charming and will give you unforgettable experiences.

Namibian cuisine - wild delicacies

The Namibian cuisine is very diverse and is influenced by the traditional cuisine of the African tribes, but also by the German colonial period and South African cuisine. A big part of Namibian cuisine is meat and meant is the meat of all animals that live in the wild in Namibia, such as ostrich, zebra, kudu, oryx, crocodile or ibex. Some of the most famous dishes are "Braaivleis" (grilled meat), "Potjie" (stew), "Biltong" (dried meat) and "Kapana" (grilled meat). In many restaurants you will also find European and international dishes. In addition, the Namibian beer and rooibos tea are highly recommended.

Highlights and sights

Namibia has many stunning sights to offer, here are just a few of the many Highlights:

  • Sossusvlei: The red sand dunes of Sossusvlei are a truly impressive natural wonder. Visit Dead Vlei and admire the parched trees that contrast with the red dunes.
  • Etosha National Park: Etosha is one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife. Here you can see elephants, lions, zebras and giraffes in their natural habitat.
  • The Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa and offers spectacular views and hiking opportunities.
