The "Route of the Conquistadores" is a route that follows the steps of the Spanish conquistadors Perefan de Ribera and Juan de Cavallon from the 16th century.
The route
The mountain bike race stretches over three days along the Pacific coast to the Caribbean. The route leads through a variety of landscapes in Costa Rica. During the race days, participants cross rainforests, climb steep slopes, ford rivers and pass through picturesque villages and pristine beaches. Refreshment stations, both from the organizers and the locals, provide the bikers with food and drink. Intense differences in altitude characterize the stage, which ends in the town of Tucurrique.
Day 2: Along majestic mountain landscapes
The second day begins in Turrialba and takes the bikers through the country's majestic mountains to Ochomogo, Cartago. Steep climbs and breathtaking views characterize this section of the route. In total, the 80 km route covers an altitude difference of 3650 m. This section of the race promises not only demanding differences in altitude, but also a variety of climatic challenges.
Day 3: the final approaches
The last stage is considered the most difficult because the participants have to cover an altitude difference of around 3,000 meters, cross rivers and climb steep mountains. The participants often have to carry the ferry bikes. The last kilometers of the race lead the participants through Coffee plantations and small villages in the central valley of Costa Rica. The exertions of the previous days are rewarded by the beautiful scenery and enthusiastic spectators along the route. The destination is Playa Herradura, Puntarenas.
La Siesta
